I got the beach boys Xmas album last year as a Xmas present for my brother Peter plus some unreleased Xmas tracks from the shelved seventies Xmas album the many different versions of the best Xmas album in the world ever brought me here.
This is exactly what a Beach Boys Christmas song should be, and for me, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without it. Beach Boys attributes: 1. It's a car song with great Christmas lyrics, a sort of a take off on their own Little Deuce Coupe; 2. Great falsetto; 3. Great bass; 4. Great harmonies; and 5. Great Brian Wilson "Christmas" touches in the instrumentation (i.e. the bell-like sounding celeste, and the wonderful sleigh bell percussion).
Finally, what a wonderful video, with Brian as Santa, and four exhausted Beach Boys trying to push the car (which looks to me like a Deuce Coupe) during the "Run, run reindeer" part.
Ehh, not really digging the stereo mix here. I think they should have mastered it in mono instead. You gotta realize at that time, records were being recorded with the intention that they would later be mixed down to a single mono speaker. Clever producers took advantage of this, such as Brian Wilson or Phil Spector, and arranged instruments in a very specific way to get the best sound they possibly could, but when you start separating the instruments the sound just doesn't have that warmness it once had. It feels like i'm listening to two awkward halves of the song in each ear instead of the final mixdown. It's just uncomfortable to me.
