In today’s video we take a look at the time that heavy metal band Metallica got banned from the European MTV Music Awards show following their profanity laden 1996 performance. The band performed two punk covers including The Misfits ‘Last Caress’ and the Anti-Nowhere League song ‘So What’ instead of ‘King Nothing’ from Load.

  • They banned all good bands and turned to absolute shit before that happened

  • Metallica is so mainstream now that even Justin Bieber likes them. They can get offended as well as their fans, but they are a joke now.

  • Some Metallica fans are their worst critics but true Metallica fans are always with them through thick and thin.

  • Mtv was cool once…like the first few years

  • I agree that load is a great album. Had an alternative band released that record, it would be regarded as one of the best albums of the decade.

  • Because they ain't give a shit and they don't want to deal with stupid political correctness

  • I 'mostly' agree with Metallica 'selling out' and sliding into mediocrity with their album load. Every album from their inception ('83) until the "Black album" ('91) was good. In my opinion, they haven't released a solid, good album since '91 — their last 'mediocre' albums were "Load" and "Re-load" — they haven't even released a 'mediocre' album since then — every subsequent album has sucked…

  • The mid to late 90’s were terrible for Metallica in general

  • If you're gonna go go, go out with a bang.

  • And here's me just thinking that this happened because Metallica is crap.

  • Considering Metallica don't specialise in offensive songs … it's pretty obvious they were telling MTV where to shove their rules.

  • The band has more fans than MTV does anyway. Metallica is still around while MTV doesn’t even play music anymore.

  • Watched this live as it happened on TV. Brilliant. I laughed my fuckin' Bollocks off!

  • I remember way way way back in the day when MTV actually played music and was worth watching.

    What happened to you MTV?

  • lol, MTV. What's Ironic too is Kennedy is now on Fox news. That one kinda surprised me. Metallica for me will always be the most badass metal band ever. No other band has hooked me like they did. For me it was teh black album '92 I was in the 7th grade. Wherever I May Roam was playing. That hooked me to metal music forever.

  • Fake act, plastic, just because they were branded as sell outs, so they tried to pull it off that way. So fuckin what? Can you pull off an Axle Rose jump off stage? Nirvana hitting an audience with a guitar or Sebastian Bach kicking the guy in front in the middle of a song. Or even do all the drugs that Dave Mustaine put in his system. LOL… Metallica my ass. They are just lucky they thought of the best band name a rock band could ever have. There's no more bad guys in rock in roll nowadays. Copycat songs, copycat acts, even copycat suicides. 80's to 90's is when rock and roll ruled. Today, the last one standing are definitelty sell outs.
